In the 1950’s, pregnant Marylou is given a strange cocktail of vitamins but really it is radioactive material that was given to a multitude of unknowing women to test the effects of radiation.  Marylou’s daughter ultimately dies from cancer when she is eight and now, fifty years later, Marylou wants revenge on the doctor responsible for the study.  Told in alternating voices by seven people who all have secrets to hide, this novel is an engrossing, darkly humorous account of dysfunction galore.

Jane, a Japanese-American documentary filmmaker, is enlisted to produce a show called My American Wife.  The show will be shown in Japan and its goal is to get Japanese women to cook more meat.  Akiko lives in Tokyo with her brute of a husband who handles the show’s advertising.  The novel alternates between these two women as each comes to understand the corruptness of the beef industry including the injection of meat with synthetic estrogens.  This unique, well written novel is one of my favorites.

Mariya Nemeth, a former stripper in Kiev, starts her life over by returning to school and marrying a man who has also turned his life around. When he dies, however, Mariya discovers his secret involvement in the underground Russian sex trade and organized crime. She convinces a Private Investigator to investigate which leads to the return of Lazlo Horvath, the man who solved the Chernobyl Murders and then moved to Chicago. What results is a nightmarish exposure of prostitution, perversion, killing and crime that leaves the reader stunned. The highly probable plot and harsh realism make this story even more disturbing.

This is the re-telling of the story of Noah and the Ark. The story is told from the perspective of Noah (called Noe) and his family members, his wife, three sons and three daughter-in-laws.  Each chapter alternates with a different narrator and gives a good idea of how each family member differently perceived the ordeal they were going through.
