I sink into the life (and death) of the village of Three Pines like a soft, enfolding pillow every time I pick up one of this series. I’ve gotten to know the people and their foibles; some are perceptive, some are artistic and one is definitely crazy – like some people I really do know.

Wise and compassionate Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is the star of this mystery set in an out-of-the-way town in Quebec. The characters and setting are so simply and beautifully depicted that I started wishing that Three Pines was a place where I could really live. I also would like to get to know Inspector Gamache a lot better and probably will since this is the first book in a series.
